6th June 2013: Al-Israh w'al-Miraj

Muslims around the world are preparing to commemorate al-Israh w'al-Miraj - 'The Night Journey.'

Al-Israh w'al-Mi'raj is a historical Islamic event that commemorates the Prophet Muhammad's, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, night time journey from Makkah to the 'Farthest Mosque' - Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem where he ascended to Heaven, saw His Majesty, Allah Almighty and then instructed on the five daily prayers (Salaah).

On the Islamic calendar, Isra al Mi'raj, or (Laylat al Miraj) is generally observed on the 27th day of the month of Rajab, although the observance begins at Maghrib on the 26th of Rajab. Muslims celebrate this night by attending the Mosque, listening to scholars lecturing on the event and by offering optional (nafil) prayers during the night. It is also desirable to keep fast on this night.
